When the US' National Security Agency (NSA)'s code-breaking machine couldn't break a mysterious complex code called Digital Fortress, Commander Trevor Strathmore called Susan Fletcher, a brilliant mathematician and their head cryptographer, to crack it. She discovered that the code was written by Ensei Tankado, a former NSA employee who became unhappy with NSA's activities againts people's private lives. Tankado intended to put the code's algorithm on his website and asked his partner, North Dakota, to release it for free if he died. The agency was determined to stop Digital Fortress from becoming a threat to national security.
